Music as Story
Gazing into Mystery, History and Beyond
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.
—Albert Einstein
(1879-1955)
The great mysteries of life are indescribable. What is the meaning of a sunset or of an ocean or of a beautiful summer day? The writer try o describe these meaning, of course, but that always only come close. Words are limiting, even
when the poets ask them to dance. Music is different. Music doesn’t have to tell the story. It can be the story. Its artisans can be storytellers. Harry Chapin did it well. In a song called Story of a Life, he sang,
I can see myself it's a golden sunrise
Young boy open up your eyes
It's supposed to be your day
Now off you go horizon bound
You won't stop until you've found
Your own kind of way
And the wind will whip your tousled hair
The sun, the rain, the sweet despair
Great tales of love and strife
And somewhere on your path to glory,
You will write your story of a life
Music tells the story of our lives. How can we tell life’s stories with music? How can music describe life’s mysteries? Come find out!
